STADOL
BACKGROUND OF STADOL
Stadol is a brand name of a butorphanol medication, which is used to relieve moderate to severe pain. Stadol is usually prescribed for patients with migraine headaches and muscle pain, and for patients who are suffering from pain before or during labor or from surgical procedures, to increase the effects of anesthesia.
Stadol is a drug that binds to opiate receptors in the central nervous system and changes perception and response to pain. Stadol is a narcotic pain reliever with qualities similar to morphine. The use of Stadol is not suitable for patients who have recently used narcotics in high doses or for those who used narcotics for a long time. Stadol is a drug that interferes with the physiological action of other drugs such as narcotics. Butorphanol, as the generic name of Stadol, is also available in other nations with trade names such as Moradol and Beforal. Butorphanol is also known as butorphanol tartate. The drug can block the effects of narcotics and may cause withdrawal symptoms, especially in people dependent on narcotics.
The effectiveness of Stadol had been studied. The drug is available in two forms--Stadol injection and Stadol NS. Studies with Stadol injection have been performed as preoperative and preanesthetic medication, as a supplement to balanced anesthesia, in abdominal and orthopedic pain, and in pain during labor and delivery. On the other hand, studies with Stadol NS have been performed in postepisiotomy pain, in postoperative pain (general, orthopedic, oral, cesarean section), in pain of musculoskeletal origin, and in migraine headache pain.
APPLICATION OF STADOL
Stadol Injection
The Stadol can be injected into the vein or into the muscles (intravenous or intramuscular) as prescribed by doctors. The condition and response to therapy of the patient will be the basis for the amount of the dosage and the time of application needed for the treatment. The Stadol injection, which works on certain centers in the brain, is used before and during surgical procedures with other forms of medication. The Stadol injection is typically used every three to four hours as prescribed by the doctor. The recommended initial dosage treatment of Stadol injection is 1 mg intravenous or 2 mg intramuscular. The application is repeated every three to four hours as necessary. The patient may experience drug dependence if the injection has been used in high doses. In addition to this, withdrawal effects such as fast heartbeat, rapid breathing, vomiting, nausea, restlessness, sleeping problems, runny nose, severe abdominal or muscle pain and watering eyes, may be experienced upon sudden stoppage of using Stadol.
Stadol NS (Nasal-Systemic)
The product Stadol NS is an aqueous solution of butorphanol tartate, which is administered as a metered spray to the nasal mucosa. This form of Stadol is usually prescribed to patients with moderate to severe migraine headaches. The initial nasal administration is one spray in one nostril, which contains 1 mg of the medication, or as directed by the doctor. If the pain persists after sixty to ninety minutes, the doctor may prescribe the application of a second spray in the other nostril. Other nasal decongestants may make Stadol NS work more slowly as a pain medication.
In cases of severe pain, Stadol NS may be used again in three to four hours after the second spray in the other nostril. The dosage of the medication depends on the need of the patient; increasing the dosage may lead to a higher risk of drowsiness and dizziness. Like the Stadol injection, Stadol NS may also lead to dependence and withdrawal effects. The use of pain relievers is much more effective if they are used when the first signs of pain occur; if the pain has worsened, the medication may not work as well.
