BACKGROUND OF ACTIQ
Actiq is a form of OTFC, which is a short term for oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate. It belongs to the group of medicines which are commonly used to relieve pain, a class of medicine collectively called narcotic analgesics. It was first manufactured by a biopharmaceutical company located in Frazer, Pennsylvania, United States, Cephalon Incorporated. The drug was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States. Actiq is a solid formulation of fentanyl citrate that can only be used upon the prescription of an expert. It was prescribed mostly by Oncologists (a category of physicians who are experts in the treatment of cancer). Actiq is a useful drug for those individuals who are tolerant to opoid therapy for cancer pain. However, the drug can be dangerous if not properly used.
HISTORY OF ACTIQ
As stated above, Actiq was introduced by Cephalon Incorporated. Cephalon Inc. was founded by Dr. Frank Baldino, Jr. in 1987. Dr. Frank Baldino, Jr. was the Chairman and Chief Executive of the company. The industry was focused on Biotechnology and specializes in the development of a medicine for Neurodegenerative disease, a condition which affects brain functions. The company was also known for its commitment to create a drug that can give an impact to patients’ lives. Recently, the company developed a drug that can treat pain, addiction and cancer. One of these was the Actiq, a medicine used in the treatment of intolerable pains, or pains that usually strike without warning, such as cancer pain. Actiq is a lollipop-like candy that comes in a plastic tube. Its generic name is fentanyl citrate. Fentanyl is an opioid analgesic developed in the late 1950s in Belgium. It has an effectiveness of about 80 times more, compared to a normal morphine. Actiq, on the other hand, has an effectiveness of about 10,000 times more, compared to a normal morphine. Actiq was commercially available upon a doctor’s prescription in the United States since 1999 and was also available in 13 other countries.
WHAT IS ACTIQ MADE OF?
Actiq or oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate is a solid formulation of fentanyl citrate. Its ingredients was composed of Fentanyl citrate, Isomalt, polyethylene glycol 8000, citric acid, dibasic sodium phosphate, artificial berry flavor, magnesium stearate, and edible glue (modified food starch and confectioner’s sugar). It is designed like candy and is easily dissolved in the mouth.
HOW ACTIQ IS USED MEDICALLY
Actiq is used as a pain reliever. It is usually used in breakthrough pains like bone injuries, migraines, severe back pain, neuropathy, arthritis, and especially in cancer pain. It is useful for patients who are experiencing sudden pain. Actiq usually takes effect 15 minutes after its consumption. Actiq delivers the pain reliever called fentanyl. It can be consumed by means of sucking it around your gums and cheeks. Its normal side effect includes constipation, dry mouth and other effects which are normally associated with this class of narcotic analgesic. Actiq is available in 6 dosages depending on the patients need. Each dosage comes with a different color for the purpose of identification.
ACTIQ ABUSE AND ADDICTION
Actiq is a powerful pain narcotic and is useful both for the doctors and their patients. However, if the drug was used in the wrong manner, it can lead to drug abuse or addiction. As of the year 2006, reports have shown that 80 percent of users are using the drug without the prescription of doctors. Most of these people do not know what harm Actiq can cause if it is overused. Physical dependence on Actiq may lead to different side effects like kidney disease, liver disease, slow heartbeat, head injuries, and in the long run, death.
ACTIQ REHABILITATION
