At Malibu Horizon we treat the whole patient, not just their substance abuse or mental disorder. Addiction is a chronic medical condition, a brain disorder. Just as hypertension and asthma have biological, psychological and social components, so does alcoholism and addiction. The diabetic can live a normal life with life adjustments and the recovering alcoholic or addict can live a normal life with their own life adjustments. Each client is treated as a unique individual, for all their issues. |
Malibu Horizon uses self-empowerment, not the 12-steps of AA, as the basis for recovery. We are an upscale, non 12 step program. We realize AA and the 12 step model are not for everyone. Our clients frequently consist of very intelligent people, many of whom come here for treatment because they have not found success in 12 step programs. Malibu Horizon is in no way opposed to the 12 steps, we consider it is aftercare, not treatment. We offer patients the opportunity to attend SMART Recovery meetings. |

Dual diagnosis occurs when someone has both an alcohol and/or drug problem as well as a psychiatric condition. The psychiatric condition would include depression, bi-polar, anxiety, panic, ADHD and others. Dual Diagnosis is when two disorders or illnesses occur in the same person, simultaneously. Both conditions must be treated simultaneously. |
