Morphine Rehabilitation

INTRODUCTION:

Morphine addiction is present in many places in the world today. It is one of those many addictions that cause a diversity of problems in our society. This addiction is becoming a widespread problem for our government. It is becoming a habit not only to elders but to our teenagers as well.

HISTORY:

In the year 1804, Morphine was discovered by Friedrich Wilhelm Adam Sertürner. Friedrich was born on 19th of June, 1783.He was known to be one of the best pharmacists in Germany. He was the first to isolate morphine from Opium. Opium is a narcotic drug harvested from the seeds of a plant called Opium poppy. Friedrich Wilhelm Adam Sertürner, named it after the Greek god of dreams Morpheus, son of Hypnos the Greek god of sleep. Friedrich Wilhelm Adam Sertürner, after his discovery, made his next move to investigate the effects of Morphine in our body. His investigation resulted in its wide use in the year 1853. In the years 1861 up to 1865, in the American Civil War, Morphine was used by soldiers in the battlefield who suffered from chronic pain.

CONTENTS:

Morphine sulfate has been described as white, feathery, silky crystals, cubical masses of crystals, or white crystalline powder. It is soluble in water and slightly soluble in alcohol. Morphine has a pKa of 7.9, with an octanol/water partition coefficient of 1.42 at pH 7.4. At this pH, the tertiary amino group is mostly ionized, making the molecule water-soluble. Morphine is significantly more water-soluble than any other opioid in clinical use. Chemically, morphine sulfate is 7,8-didehydro-4,5 -epoxy-17-mtehyl-morphinian-3, 6 -diol sulfate(2:1)(salt)pentahydrate.

USE:

Morphine is classified as an opiate analgesic drug. This drug can be taken orally or by means of an injection. Morphine is classified as a Schedule II drug in the United States. This means that Morphine only becomes available upon the prescription of an expert. it also means that the distribution of Morphine is cautiously controlled and observed by the Drug Enforcement Agency. Morphine acts directly on our nervous system. It was used by many experts to treat severe chronic pain such as pain after surgery, pain associated with trauma, pain from kidney stones, and cancer pain. It is also used to treat opium and alcohol addiction. However, although this drug has found much use, it is largely being abused by many people today.

ABUSE:

As stated above, Morphine is a helpful drug. However, Morphine can also be a dangerous drug in the wrong hands. As we all know, the drug Morphine is a powerful opioid analgesic drug that is highly addictive. Morphine, like any other opioid drugs, quickly develops tolerance and physical and psychological dependence. This means that the need for higher and higher dosage of Morphine takes place. Though most of as know that overdose of this drug can lead to death, addicts and abusers still dare on using it improperly. The following are the effects of morphine abuse:

REHABILITATION:

Addiction and abuse of Morphine is a very serious problem. However, with the help of the right facilities, like Malibu Horizon, addiction can be treated. The facility of Malibu Horizon is one of many rehab centers that offers the most comfortable way to get treated. There are many ways to treat addiction and abuse. These treatments are residential treatment, psychological treatment, and many more. However, most of the time, patients who have gone through these treatments have found their rehabilitation unsuccessful. However, Malibu Horizon offers different kinds of treatment called detoxification, a process wherein the removal of a certain toxic substance in our body takes place. Detoxification, as most experts say, is the most comfortable way of getting treated of addiction. Detoxification requires the use of another drug to counteract the effects of a certain drug being abused. The drug used often has a milder effect but consists of a similar chemical to the one being detoxified. This drug helps the patient to minimize the withdrawal effects suffered by the body during treatment. In the case of Morphine addiction the drug being used is Methadone. Methadone helps to lessen the fatal effects of withdrawal that sometimes lead to emotional trauma, stroke, heart attack, and even death. With this kind of treatment a patient can still live his/her life like normal people do.
